Physical Therapy Technology

Physical Therapy Technologies

We at Physical Therapy Specialists believe that the combination of technology with hands on manual therapy and corrective exercise are most effective ways to get someone feeling better and moving better. This kind of approach represents physical therapy at its best: the integration of technology and physical science. Below are some of the Sports Medicine Technologies that we use here in our office.

We specialize in technological approaches to common issues requiring physical therapy. All types of muscular pain can be addressed using our approach. Unlike other physical therapists in Orange County we integrate all of these technologies in our patient therapy sessions.

Thermostim Heat & Cold Therapy

We use Dynatronics Thermostim therapy to combine either heat or cold with electrical stimulation of the muscles. The Thermostim treats muscle strains, cervical whiplash, hamstring strains, lower back spasms, tension headaches and hip bursitis.

Why it’s important:

It combines heat and cold with electrical stimulation to relax muscles, improve circulation and decrease muscle spasms.

Tri-Wave Cold Laser Technology

We use cold laser technology to improve blood flow, reduce pain, and stimulate the tissue healing process. The Tri-Wave treats conditions like tennis elbow, golfers elbow, hip bursitis, shoulder pain, rotator cuff tendonitis, plantar fasciitis and achilles tendonitis. The Tri-Wave can treat multiple areas at once and is useful for conditions that stretch across the body.

Why it’s important:

Works by releasing Nitrous Oxide to help improve circulation and blood flow, decrease pain and accelerate the tissue healing process.

Iontophoresis

Iontophoresis is the newest addition to our treatment approach. It is a very effective anti-inflammatory treatment for plantar fasciitis, hip bursitis, shoulder bursitis and tendinitis. The electrically charged patch delivers anti-inflammatory medication into the tissue to decrease localized pain and inflammation.

Why it’s important:

We are able to deliver anti-inflammatory medication directly to the affected areas of the body.

Empi Continuum

The Empi Continuum Muscle Stimulation is a clinical treatment we use to specifically treat post-surgical conditions such as rotator cuff repairs, ACL reconstruction, total knee replacements, arthroscopic knee procedures like meniscal repairs. It is a manually triggered neuro-muscular stimulation unit that delivers electrical impulses directly to the muscle during exercise.

Why it’s important:

It helps activate and strengthen weak and atrophied muscles more effectively than just regular exercises.

Rock Tape

Rock Tape closely resembles human skin in thickness and elasticity. Taping is effective in addressing muscle swelling and other forms of inflammation. We use Rock Tape to treat tendinitis, muscle strains, muscle activation and postural correction.

Why it’s important:

Rock Tape helps prevent future muscle injury and is an effective treatment for overuse and inflammatory conditions.

Motion Guidance System

A form of biofeedback training used specifically for post operative neck and shoulder surgeries, orthopedic knee surgeries, ACL reconstruction, and rotator cuff training. Using a patented system of lasers, patients are able to retrain head and eye movements and coordinate joints and muscles in a variety of positions, tempos, and reactive movements. Effective in athletic development training to improve the efficiency of athletic movements.

Why it’s important:

Promotes patient movement awareness with laser technology to enhance coordination.

Bio-Feedback EMG

Bio-feedback EMG technology treats overuse injuries such as tension headaches, TMD and shoulder impingement problems. Most people don’t have a problem activating muscles, however turning a muscle off is much more challenging. This technology helps patients reduce the amount of tension in stiff and painful muscles. Patients are able control and actively relax or “turn off” the muscles and reduces tension of the head, neck and jaw.

Why it’s important:

Helps discover which muscles to properly activate so that the patient is not overcompensating by using unnecessary muscles.
